AI Generates Pro Cyclist Nutrition Plan

Scientists from Maastricht University in the Netherlands are working with the Jumbo-Visma professional road cycling team to unlock ideal nutritional plans for significant stage races like the Tour De France. To build these personalized plans, they are utilizing AI models that ingest rider biometric and power data, race profiles, and weather information.

To test the reliability and increase the accuracy of this tech, the researchers have previously had team nutrition coaches and the AI model estimate calorie requirements for numerous athletes in stages of the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. A score was assigned for each test, between zero and one, with one being the most accurate. Coaches averaged a score of 0.55, while the machine-learned model averaged 0.82.

While preliminary results on a small sample, as this tech continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how more teams utilize AI and machine learning to optimize their riders’ performance.

For the seventh year in a row, the best road cyclists in the U.S. descended to Knoxville, TN, for a chance to take home the Stars and Stripes jersey at the 2023 U.S. Pro Road National Championships. With the Individual Time Trial (ITT) and Criterium race done and dusted, the men and women tackle the infamous Sherrod Street climb in the road race today. You can check out the course for each event here, results here, and live stream through Flobikes.

  • Coryn Labecki (Jumbo Visma) launched her attack with four corners to go, cruising to victory for her 73rd U.S. National Title

  • Luke Lamperti (Trinity Racing) sprinted through the final corner to achieve his third nonconsecutive Criterium National Title

  • Chloe Dygert (Canyon-SRAM) prevailed in the rain to win her second U.S. women’s time trial title and qualify for the ITT World Championships in Glasgow later this summer

  • Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) crushed the course, finishing 1:32 ahead of second place. It was his first time back racing the event for the 25-year-old world tour pro since 2019

Most Impressive Tech From EUROBIKE 2023

The time has come for EUROBIKE 2023, a bike and future mobility trade show in Frankfurt, Germany. The event has a long history since 1991 and has grown into an international spectacle for the cycling industry and fans alike. Last year the 4-day event boosted over 1,500 exhibitors, 33,000 industry visitors, and over 27,000 cycling fans. The most exciting part of the event is seeing all the new tech; I will break down my top five from the first three days.

  1. Aleck, the U.S.-based startup company, has just released a radio speaker system to listen to music and communicate with other riders that attach to any helmet strap. They also teased a crash detector in partnership with Smith helmets

  2. Camelbak has just entered the bikepacking bag game with a complete lineup of on-bike storage (Camelbak M.U.L.E), including a saddle bag, frame bag, handlebar bag, and even a stainless steel insulated water bottle

  3. STOLL Bikes, the German bike manufacturer, had their 15lb carbon hardtail mountain bike on display with a very sleek design

  4. Serial 1, powered by Harley Davidson, had multiple e-bikes on display with an integrated light set, Brooks saddle, and aluminum frame

  5. Topeak showed off their new pump stand that is capable with any frame size and highly portable, making for easy bike repairs anywhere

NEW JERSEYS FOR THE 2023 TOUR DE FRANCE

With the biggest race in cycling quickly approaching (Sat, Jul 1, 2023 – Sun, Jul 23, 2023), many teams are taking the time to release new special edition custom kits for the event. For some, it is due to a sponsorship refresh; for others a tribute to team history; and for the two teams whose colors are predominantly yellow, it is out of respect for the maillot jaune (general classification race leader yellow jersey).

So it begs the question, what is your favorite kit?
